Hemis: The Most Colourful Ladakh Festival

Ladakh is an incomparable land of culture and adventure. It showcases the true Buddhist culture in all the aspects of lifestyle and invites travellers from all parts of the world. Fairs and festivals of Ladakh have always been a great medium to reflect the cultural practices and traditions of this divine and splendid land. When it comes to Ladakh festivals, Hemis proves to be a major crowd puller. It boasts of being the biggest festive celebration of the 'Little Tibet'. This two-day festival is celebrated at the Hemis monastery.
Major Attractions
A colourful fair is organized during this auspicious occasion which displays some beautiful, traditional and the rarest of handicrafts. The Ladakhis can be seen dressed up in their finest traditional attires for the occasion. Spectacular mask dances and sacred plays are major attractions of the festival. These are performed on the beats of cymbals, drums & long horns. The dances are locally called 'Cham dances', which are performed by group of mask wearing monks. These highly choreographed sacred dances reflect the image representation of deities and devils.
Hemis Monastery
Located 40 km from Leh, Hemis monastery is the richest and biggest in Ladakh. It is known for its spectacular scenic beauty, exotic wildlife, and varied cultural influences. Built in 1630, during the reign of Sengge Namgyal, the monastery is dedicated to the Drugpa sect. People from far off places come to this monastery and appreciate its unique frescoes, Buddhist 'wheel of life' (Kalachakra) and the lords of the four quarters.
